Authentic Curriculum Topic
My topic is for a 6th-grade science lesson that will cover food chains/webs, ecosystems, and biomes.
Project expectations:
-
Build a biome (using bowls, plastic bottles, boxes, etc)
-
Include 5 parts of a food chain native to that biome
-
Include 1 each of a biotic and an abiotic factor
Technology Use and Higher-Level Thinking Opportunities:

Make a video or make a presentation using Canva explaining:

-
Imagine if one of the parts of the food chain were removed, what would be the impact on the rest of the food chain?
-
Explain what could cause a species to disappear from the biome
-
Come up with potential ideas to help stop this.

I picked this lesson to help the students learn about relationships between biotic and abiotic factors in our ecosystems. I added the higher-level thinking sections to make the students critically think about several real-life possibilities. Their understanding of how food chains work, and being able to identify different biomes and ecosystems, is memory recall. This is important, I wanted the students to think more. This section will help them think critically about cause and effect and be able to identify ways this could happen. Finally, I wanted them to think critically about other scenarios that would impact ecosystems.
